born in Sheffield and educated there at the Royal Grammar School; schoolmaster of Pisgah Vale, before commencing studies in Edin; MA 1834, winning the gold medal for philosophy; FRSA Scot; hon M. Newcastle Lit & Phil Soc; hon diploma from Inst Dosimetric Medicine, Paris; attracted to hydropathy after taking the cure in Malvern in the early 1840s, he subsequently trained in homoeopathy (correspondence degree from Cleveland Homoeopathic College) and established a practice in Banbury; lectured on homoeopathy in Warwick and Stratford, 1850s-60s; joint ed with Charles Pearce of Homoeopathic Record; sold his homoeopathic practice c1858 and, with his four children, moved to Aberdeen where he enrolled as a med student and received his MD in 1861; removing to Glasgow, he took a masters degree in surgery, 1862; practiced (without registering) in Stratford and then Reading; remained a strong critic of allopathic medicine, writing dozens of articles and pamphlets on hydropathy and homoeopathy, as well as on spiritualism, grammar, the land question and phrenology. Became interested in phrenology c1835 while in Edin; VP SHEFFIELD PHREN SOC, 1846-47; M PHREN ASSN, 1840s; lectured on the harmony between phrenology and scripture; interested in mesmerism and phreno-mesmerism after seeing Lafontain's demonstrations in England in 1842; a friend of E. T. CRAIG, he provided comments on the physician and socialist H. Y. Travis for CRAIG'S Memoir (1884); supplied a testimonial for GOYDER, 1845 for the chair of phrenology at Glasgow; an essay on hypnotism in the PHREN ANN in 1892 is among the last of his writings.
