LSA 1832, FRS 1855; med statistician; studied medicine in Shrewsbury, 1826-8, and in Paris, 1829-31, acquiring at the latter an interest in hygiene and med statistics, as well as an interest in anthropometry; conducted a careful study of the heads of cretins at Montigny in Switzerland in 1831; studied at Univ Coll, 1831-2; through J. CLARK'S influence he obtained in 1838 the post of compiler of abstracts in the Registrar-General's Office; M Stats Soc, 1839; a contibutor to LANCET from 1835 and the author of numerous important statistical reports; M PHREN ASSN, 1842.
