Edin 1817, FRCS 1845; practiced in Penzance, Chichester and London; devoted to meteorological and geological pursuits; secretary of Chichester Lit & Phil Soc, 1840; established the BR & FOR MED REV, 1836, and was outspoken on the subjects of homoeopathy, allopathy and mesmerism; co-ed with J. CONOLLY, A. Tweedie, Cyclopaedia of Practical Med (1832-5); intimate of A. COMBE and a school fellow and life-long friend of J. CLARK, through whose influence he was appointed phys to Prince Albert and the Queen's Household in 1841; M PHREN ASSN, defecting in 1842 over materialism; confessed in 1843 that the recorded facts of phrenology were insufficient to establish it as a science; knighted in 1853.
