the Swedenborgian sage of Burton St and Ham Common, London; Pestalozzian teacher at Yverdun and elsewhere on the continent before returning to England in 1825 and founding the Infant School Society; a follower of the mystic Jacob Boehme, he gathered around him most of those interested in the occult and in alternative life and health styles, notably Charles Lane and Henry Wright; corresponded with Amos Bronson Alcott and other American Transcendentalists; attended meetings of the London Philosophical Soc with G. H. LEWES and others in the late 1830s; wrote obscure works on education and the soul and ed CONTRASTING MAG, 1827; elected a member of the LONDON PHREN SOC, May 1826. (DNB)
