Edin 1828, FRCP Edin, FRS Edin 1832; fourth son of James Gregory, prof of med in Edin; studied chemistry under Liebig in Giessen, 1835; accepted a lectureship at the Andersonian Univ, 1837, at Dublin Univ, 1838, King's Coll, Aberdeen, 1839, before becoming prof of chemistry at Edin, 1844 (his competitor, Lyon Playfair, being his successor in 1858); author of various works on chemistry and on mesmerism, and translator of Baron von Reichenbach's Researches on Magnetism, 1846; pres Scottish Curative Mesmeric Assn, 1856; M Br Assn; active in EDIN PHREN SOC; M PHREN ASSN from Sept 1840; delivered a popular course of lectures on phrenology at the Andersonian Univ, 1839; pres Edin Roy Med Soc in 1836 when he supplied G.
