son of a Nottinghamshire Quaker cobbler; worked as a stockinger and a printer before aspiring to poetry, essays and journalism; known as the "Sherwood Forrester": took up hydropathy and homoeopathy in the 1850s and practiced in Derby, Kendal, Burnley, and elsewhere before settling in Blackpool, 1881; interested in spiritualism; took up the cause of phreno-mesmerism in 1843 and lectured on and demonstrated it throughout England and Scotland; ed PHRENO-MAGNET (1843); sec SHEFFIELD PHREN SOC, 1843; supplied GOYDER with a testimonial, 1845; died a pauper.
