civil engineer; son of Isaac Hawkins of Taunton; lived for many years in Bordentown, New Jersey, where in 1852 he started the Journal of Human Nature and Human Progress; MICE 1824 and a consulting engineer in London, 1816-49, before returning to New York; invented, among other curiosities, the ever-pointed pencil; a Swedenborgian; M Br Assn; with EPPS established in 1835 the Common Good Soc (EPPS described him as "more enthusiastic than intelligent"); pres Kentish Town Mechanics' Lit & Sci Inst, 1836; first became interested in phrenology in 1815; treasurer LONDON PHREN SOC until 1842 when he established and presided over the CHRISTIAN PHREN SOC; M PHREN ASSN, 1839; lectured on phrenology to many London insts in the 1830s and 1840s.
