of Warriston, near Edin; son of a wealthy Edin banker; amateur landscape painter and dilettante; became deeply interested in phrenology in early 1820s, joining the EDIN PHREN SOC in 1824; unmarried, he left over £5,000 for the advancement of phrenology, to include publication of a cheap edition of G. COMBE's Constitution of Man for "intelligent individuals of the poorer classes and Mechanics' Institutions, etc"--the funds. were also used to float the PHREN J during its lean years; attempted to lecture on phrenology to workers in Leith but abandoned lectur ing due to an embarrassing stutter.
