temperance advocate, hydropath, and healthean, much influenced by Joseph BARKER; a Quaker, studied for the ministry; founded "Nature's Beverage Soc, or Independent Order of Horebites," 1842, and the Vegetarian Soc, 1847 wrote and published temperance books and periodicals; in 1859 joined with Job Caudwell in the publishing firm of Horsell & Caudwell; ran the Phrenological Depot at 492 Oxford St, London where courses of lectures on phrenology were on offer along with works (mostly by the FOW- LERS); lectured on phrenology and other subjects with TOWGOOD and INWARDS at Camden Hall, London; sailed for Africa in 1863 and died of fever at Lagos.
