Editorial Description

born in Somerset of Wesleyan parents; lamed at 13; moved from Bristol to London, 1832, where he attempted to launch himself as a writer, spending an unsuccessful seven years in the British Museum; turned to lecturing and in Bridgeport met William DAVEY with whom he lectured for ten years until Davey's death in 1858; settled in Edin, 1855, where he lectured and published on phrenology and mesmerism and ran a phreno-mesmeric clinic; supplemented his income with newspaper and periodical journalism; wrote, among other things, the "Myths of Antiquity" (HUMAN NATURE, 1867/8) and "The Superiority of the Male Element in the Plan of Nature" (Future), 1860; moved to Glasgow after Davey's death, presided over the Curative Mesmeric Assn and became a leading figure in the Glasgow Assn of Spiritualists; M EDIN PHREN ASSN, 1864; married in 1866 and returned to London.
