; general practitioner in Scarborough and London before emigrating to America in 1820 and becoming a distinguished teacher of elocution at Yale and Harvard; VP Boston Phen Soc upon its establishment in 1832; friend and pupil of SPURZHEIM; lectured and manipulated in USA and Canada in 1836, and on the continent and in Britain 1838-42; debated with BRINDLEY in Bristol in 1842; also lectured on elocution in London; returned to medical practice in Canada in the mid-1840s as a homoeopath; professor of oratory at McGill University until 1862.
