phys; attended Duke of Clarence and became phys extraordinary (1830) on the Duke's accession to the throne as William IV; established and edited MEDICO-CHIRURGICAL J & REV, 1816-44, and the WEEKLY MEDICO-CHIRURGICAL J, 1816- 48; a liberal "though free from scepticism or ultra-radicalism"; author of popular medical works; a prominent member of the Westminster Med Soc; supplied G. COMBE with a testimonial on the value of phrenology, 1836, saying that "without subscribing to all the details of phrenology, I believe its fundamental principles to be based on truth." (DNB)
