mental physiologist; prof of med and lecturer on med psychol and mental diseases, Univ Edin; among his pupils were James CRICHTON-BROWNE, Hughlings Jackson and David FERRIER; extended the doctrine of reflex action to the brain and claimed priority in the use of the phrase "unconscious cerebration" (1838); intimate of John FORBES; in Mind and Brain (1860) he accorded merit to phrenology as "founded on natural principles."
