naturalist; studied med at St. Bartholomew's Hosp, London, and at Edin; MD Edin 1812; assistant librarian British Museum, 1813; FRS 1816; a friend of FORS- TER, he wrote the Preface to Sketch of the New Anatomy, and through FORSTER, became acquainted with SPURZHEIM; invented the "gonio-craniometer" to measure the angle of the facial line; gave a large donation of skulls to the EDIN PHREN SOC, Apr 1837.
