M FP & S, Glas; author and phys; MD Glasgow, 1825, thesis later published as The Anatomy of Drunkenness (1827); wrote various tales, essays and sketches (collected in 2 vols with a Life by D. M. Moir, 1838), and a Book of Aphorisms (1834); raised a strict Calvinist; attracted to phrenology after attending GALL'S lectures in Paris in 1825, previously having been contemptuous; attended G. COMBE'S lectures and supplied him and G. MACKENZIE with testimonials on phrenology in 1836, but annoyed Edin phrenologists by his writing for the anti-phrenological BLACK- WOOD'S EDIN MAG. (DNB)
