writer; Unitarian daughter of a Norwich manufacturer; brother of James Martineau; lionized in London after successfully publishing on political economy; contributed to the major journals and came to write regularly for the Daily News; also wrote novels and travelogues and translated COMTE'S Positive philosophy (1853); suffered from a prolapsed uterus which she believed was cured by the mesmeric treatment initiated by S. T. HALL in 1843, to the scandal of many. (DNB)
