poet and ed Sheffield Register; imprisoned for libel, 1795; superintended the Sheffield Mechanics' and Apprentices Library, 1823-4, and the Mechanics' Inst; became increasingly conservative in the 1830s; lectured on phrenology in Sheffield Lit & Phil Soc, 1826, defending the doctrine against Sir William HAMILTON'S attack on it as fatalistic, materalistic and atheistic, though (in the following entry) he wrote against phrenological cerebral determinism.
