leading practical phrenologist of London at turn of century; born Limerick; gave his first phrenology lecture at the age of 18 to the YMCA in Arklow, Co Wicklow; proposed (c1880) a National Village scheme, a type of cooperative scheme to end unemployment; founder in 1868 and pres London Phren Inst, Ludgate Circus; averaged 15,000 phrenological customers a year in the 1890s; his lectures on phrenology in the 1880s were attended by William Morris.
