surgeon to Sheffield Infirmary; son of a Sheffield clerk; local science activist with a natural history museum in Church St; Quaker, but later announced himself a convert to freethought; involved in local reform movement; brother of John Overend of the Lombard St banking firm of Overend, Gurney, & Co, London; claimed to be the first to introduce phrenology into Sheffield; delivered four lectures on phrenology in the Lit & Phil Soc, 1830, and lectured on it in Nottingham, 1824; his son Wilson (1806-65) became a leading surgeon and medical lecturer in Sheffield; his eldest son, John (1802-32), MD Edin 1824, of Doncaster, became a member of the EDIN PHREN SOC, Feb 1824.
