Edin, 1836; Hon MD 1842; taught med jurisprudence and anatomy at an extra-academic med school in Edin; surgeon to the Lock Hosp; phys and med supt Roy Edin Asylum, 1846-73; author of works on insanity; remembered for his classification of mental patients according to their bodily conditions, and as the founder of the "Edinburgh School of Psychiatry."
