1816; studied med at Trinity Coll, Dublin and at Edin; practiced in Canada from 1819 to 1822; taught at Brewer St School of Med, London, and was involved in the building of the Royal Western Hosp, Marylebone, after having been rejected as a candidate for surgeon to St. George's Hosp, 1827; vain and viciously paranoid, he alienated his colleagues at the Royal Western and forced the Hosp to be closed; emigrated to Philadelphia in Feb 1834 where he wrote against infidelity and Owenism and against both the abolition of slavery and the abolition of the Corn Laws; returned to London and stood as MP for Hastings and St Leonard, 1844; a patron and advocate of phrenology in the early 1820s, he was EPPS' first phrenological contact in London.
