Birmingham radical and Unitarian; at various times author, shopkeeper, printer, engraver, stationer, notary public, ed Birmingham Inspector (1817) and Midland Chronicle; VP Birmingham Mechanics' Inst; attracted to Owenism and Combean phrenology, 1830s; author of Errors of the Social System (1834), and Letters on the State and Prospect of Society (1838); arranged the meeting of the PHREN ASSN in Birmingham, 1839; Christian socialist; corresponded with G. COMBE; a friend of C. BRAY; taught phrenology in the Birmingham Mechanics' Inst and publicly vindicated COMBE'S phrenology in two lectures, 1838 after a course of antiphrenological lectures by BRINDLEY; also gave free lectures on geology in other Midland towns, 1830s; M PHREN ASSN, 1839.
