Scottish divine; minister in Edin and, after 1827, in Glasgow; prof of church history, 1831-43, and in Free Church Coll, Edin, 1844-5; led the break-away of the Free Church; author of a Life of Thomas Brown (1825) (reviewed PHREN J, 2 [1824/5]: 308-21); ed North Br Rev, 1840-5; one of the four original members of the EDIN PHREN SOC, which was suggested by him in Feb 1820 and over which he presided, 1830-1; broke with G. COMBE over the publication of the Constitution of Man. (DNB)
