Chartist and Owenite of Sunderland; worked in a confectionary shop owned by a Quaker who taught him peace and teetotal principles; subsequently a book and newsagent; arrested for Chartist activity, 1839, he spent six months in prison; referred to in the NEW MORAL WORLD in 1843 as our "excellent and valued friend"; became a town councillor of Sunderland; lectured on phreno-mesmerism in the North East, 1843.
