Scottish born med author; MD Edin 1819, practiced med in London, but at the suggestion and on the recommendation of ABERNETHY was appointed librarian to the new College of Surgeons, where he remained until 1845 when he took up practice in Barnes, Surrey; M Roy Med & Chirurg Soc; VP Westminster Med Soc, 1845; translated William Harvey and SPURZHEIM'S Anatomy of the Brain; a freethinker, he wrote a life of Spinoza (1870); M EDIN PHREN SOC from June 1820 and of the LONDON PHREN SOC from 1824; delivered a course of lectures on phrenology in London early in 1824 that were notable for their failure to attract more than seven auditors; supplied G.
