of Barnard Castle; a Roman Catholic and a Whig; amateur geologist, FGS and author of The Internal Structure of Fossil Vegetables (1833); resided for eight years in Edin where he joined the EDIN PHREN SOC in April 1833; VP Wernerian Nat Hist Soc, 1828 and M Roy Soc Edin; one of the few Catholics to be involved in the early history of the Br Assn. and was active in the arrangements for its meeting in Newcastle in 1838; High Sheriff of Co Durham, 1844; provided a testimonial to G.
