Glasgow, 1831; grandson of a Presbyterian minister and brother of a moderator of the Free Church of Scotland in Dumfries; sometimes lecturer on anatomy in the Glasgow Mechanics' Inst; figured prominently in 1828 as a supporter of Thomas Campbell against Sir Walter Scott as rector of Glasgow Univ; moved to London where he died at an early age; lectured on phrenology and physiology in Glasgow Mechanics' Inst for six months in 1833, in Greenock, 1833-6, and on one occasion in the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Glasgow.
