publisher and author; established Chambers' Edin J, 1832; wrote (and published anonymously through his friend Alexander IRELAND of Manchester) Vestiges of Creation (1844), claimed by many to have been written by G. COMBE, who was a friend of his and to whom he supplied a testimonial, 1836; M ETHNOL SOC and PHREN ASSN; FRS Edin, 1840 and maintained a wide correspondence with leading scientific figures; converted to phrenology in 1834 and covertly introduced it into Chambers' Edin J to which act he attributed the great rise in the journal's circulation.
