Liberal MP, foremost leader of the Anti-Corn Law League; his first attempt at writing was a play "The Phrenologist," which was rejected by Covent Garden (c1831); became an enthusiast of phrenology after having had his head read by G. COMBE; found COMBE'S Constitution of Man "like a transcript of his own familiar thoughts"; on council of MANCHESTER PHREN SOC, 1838; correspondent of G. COMBE; a member of the Manchester "Friends of Education" who invited J. SIMPSON to lecture in Manchester in 1836. (DNB; and N. C. Edsall, Cobden, 1986.)
