Cowan of Reading (d. 1856); lecturer on anatomy in Bath, where he practiced med, 1835-9; hon phys Reading Dispensary and sen phys to Roy Berkshire Hosp, 1830 to death; an early exponent of auscultation and translator of Louis; early and energetic member of the BMA; anti-homoeopath in the 1850s; author of several medical works; regarded as one of the best speakers in the medical profession; active in Low Church politics in Reading and author of various works on Church association, modern spiritualism, and biblical literalism; lectured against socialism in Reading Town Hall (and was attacked for it in NEW MORAL WORLD, 2 May 1840: 1273-5); provided G. COMBE with a testimonial in 1836; Christian phrenologist; lectured on phrenology 1836-43 in Reading (in 1836 to over 800 persons in a benefit for the Royal Berkshire Hosp) and Bath; M PHREN ASSN, 1840; rejected phrenology in the 1840s . after encountering the criticisms of FLOURENS.
