Editorial Description

Manchester fustian cutter, Owenite socialist and organizer and historian of the Ralahine Commune, Co Clare, Ire; assistant ed Star in the East, after 1836; lectured occasionally on phrenology before 1836 and constantly thereafter, becoming one of the most active itinerants in Britain in the 1840s, when he was for a time employed as a peripatetic lecturer for the Yorkshire Union of Mechanics' Insts; in 1843 he added mesmerism to his lectures and edited the weekly Mesmerist, and from July 1843, the ANNALS OF MESMERISM AND MESMERO-PHRENOLOGY; manipulated on stage and privately; mesmerized patients for teeth extraction (see Extract from Minute of meeting of a Committee of Medical and other Gentlemen, held at Edinburgh on May 1st, 1843, at which J. SIMPSON and R. COX were present); used a cast of the radical Rowland Detrosier as a model of perfect mental organization; became a member of the PHREN ASSN 1840, while living in Nottingham; hon M SHEFFIELD PHREN SOC and pres BR PHREN SOC, 1888; continued with journalism, education, social reform and ventilation.
