Editorial Description

itinerant science lecturer, involved with Br Assn, strongly opposing the proposals for its autocratic organization in 1831; on council of LONDON PHREN SOC, 1823; claimed to have discovered the faculty of "Alimentiveness" (hunger): lectured in most British towns, c1825-35, mainly in Lit & Phil socs; also wrote and lectured on mnemonics; believed by GOYDER to have been responsible for introducing phrenology into Bristol.
