born Edin; apprenticed as a bookbinder in Leeds; engineer and brass founder in London, 1848-71; sanitary engineer in Southwark, 1871-92; took temperance pledge in 1838 and became sec of the Total Abstinence Society of Nottingham and, in 1846, of the National Temperance League; sec Complete Suffrage Assn, 1842 and of the Health of Towns Assn, 1848; decried the evils of competitive capitalism but ended up trying to spiritualize the working class; wrote on juvenile depravity and on the deterrent effect of capital punishment; M SHEFFIELD PHREN SOC, 1841; chairman of the [NEW] LONDON PHREN SOC, 1856; commenced the weekly PHRENO-MAGNETIC VINDICATOR, March 1844; lectured on phrenology in the Midlands, 1842-4.
